'Can't do their job properly': Roy Keane reveals hilarious gaffe in first Sunderland team talk

Roy Keane has revealed his 'big moment' during his first Sunderland team talk was ruined by an unfortunate error from his scouting department.

The Manchester United legend was appointed at the Stadium of Light in August 2006, and led the Black Cats to victory in his first match in charge at Derby County.

Keane would go on to guide Sunderland from the Championship relegation zone to promotion to the Premier League, and was backed for a sensational return this month before the appointment of Alex Neil.

Reflecting on his first team talk, the pundit detailed his plans for his side to target the weaknesses of Derby's goalkeeper.

Having instructed his strikers to 'nail' the shot-stopper, this tactic was quickly abandoned following a raised hand from David Connolly.

Keane told 'The Overlap Live': "My first team talk at Sunderland, we played Derby away. We were in the hotel and I was speaking to the players and I'm thinking I've got to get this right, I've got to win the players over.

"You know, you over-analyse stuff in your head. I was speaking about Derby, and I went on about the goalkeeper a bit long. I said their goalkeeper is not great, he's not great on crosses, somebody nail him in the first few minutes.

"There was a player in the background, David Connolly, who had his hand up at the back. I'm looking at him and going he hardly needs the toilet.

"I go on and eventually I'm chatting to the players and I go 'Dave, what is it'? This is my big moment, and he went you know the keeper you're on about?

"I went yeah, and he said he was sold two weeks ago. There you go, the scouts can't do their job properly!

"Everyone was dead relaxed afterwards, and we won 2-1! You can talk about team talks, but you need these light moments.

"You can win players over when you have a little bit of humour."
