America is one step closer to boosting its capacity to build ships after the Pentagon gave certification for a Maine-based shipyard to manufacture a second guided-missile destroyer. This follows efforts by the US government to improve its maritime industrial base as they look to boost their military capabilities amidst increasing numbers of navies in rival nations such as China. This was announced by the Department of War on Monday, which certified General Dynamics Bath Iron Works (BIW) as having the necessary production capacity and stability to manufacture another Arleigh Burke-class destroyer.
This certification followed a phased assessment of the shipyard's management, production efficiency, and capacity to cope with increased production.
