CAMRA's Tyneside and Northumberland Pub of the Year winners revealed

Some 2,000 Tyneside and Northumberland members of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) have had their say and voted for their favourite pubs and clubs across the region.

After a difficult couple of years due to the global Coronavirus pandemic, CAMRA members have been hard at work visiting the North East's hostelries and subsequently deciding on winners.

Paul Hillhouse, Chairman of the local CAMRA branch, explained that the members vote to make up a shortlist which is then supplemented by a judging process to determine the overall winners.

"Top notch beer and cider is obviously important," said Paul, "but we also look to ensure winners are comfortable, welcoming to all and an important part of the local community."

He continued: "Pubs and clubs are one of the few places that people can meet in a relaxed, social atmosphere, which is more important than ever when society is starting to open up again."

Here are the big winners of coveted CAMRA awards in Northumberland and Tyneside for 2022.

Pub of the Year 2022:

South East Northumberland - The Office, Morpeth

South West Northumberland - Wor Local, Prudhoe

Tyneside - The County, Gosforth - Overall branch pub of the year

Andrea Johnson from The Office in Morpeth, who took home both Pub and Cider Pub of the Year awards for Northumberland South, said: "The award means a lot, not just to me but to the regulars who really make the pub what it is."

Paul Hillhouse added: "Micropubs are popular as the they prioritise good quality beer and cider alongside a cosy, friendly atmosphere.

"It's also welcome to see traditional pubs like the County and the Central winning. We've got a fantastic range of different types of pubs in our area and we're keen to celebrate them.

"It's also great to see some pubs that prioritise cider so strongly in a region where traditionally Real Cider has struggled. "

Pub of the year winners can choose to have presentations in their pubs or receive their awards at the 44th Newcastle Beer and cider festival on April 6th at Northumbria University Student Union.
