Early Monday morning, a campus police officer was shot and injured in Denver while attempting to apprehend a suspect who had trespassed into a vehicle. The incident occurred at approximately 1:18 a.m. on the Auraria Campus, a shared campus that includes Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and University of Colorado Denver, located in downtown Denver.
According to campus officials, two campus officers approached a suspect who was trespassing into a vehicle. The suspect reportedly assaulted the officers and then fled the scene. Subsequently, when the officers located the suspect again, he resisted arrest, prompting the officers to deploy a taser. In response, the suspect fired multiple shots, striking one officer in the arm before fleeing once more.
The injured officer was promptly taken to a hospital, where he received treatment for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Fortunately, he was later discharged from the hospital. The Auraria Campus Police, in conjunction with the Denver Police Department, successfully apprehended the suspect following the incident. The suspect was transported to a hospital for evaluation, with officials noting uncertainty regarding whether the initial taser deployment had made contact.
The Denver Police Department has taken over the investigation into the shooting incident. The safety and security of the campus community remain a top priority, and authorities are working diligently to ensure the well-being of all individuals involved. Further updates on the case are expected as the investigation progresses.
