Campaigner Jack Monroe creates new McDonald’s burger that ‘needs to be on the menu’

McDonald’s are regularly switching up their menu to offer some variety to fast food lovers and on-the-go eaters. Earlier this year we saw the Chicken Big Mac added to the menu, which has since been replaced by the Big Tasty.

But anti-poverty campaigner Jack Monroe has created their own McDonald’s burger, which has left fans of the original order drooling.

Jack, best known for their activism and budget recipes, shared a menu hack that featured two vegan McPlants sandwiched together to resemble the iconic Big Mac, which is now being dubbed the Big MacPlant.

The 34-year-old shared a snap of the meal, including a carton of fries, on Twitter and wrote: “Dismembered two McPlant burgers and reassembled them (with a homemade secret sauce) to make the Big MacPlant. Can confirm it absolutely needs to be on the menu. Over to you, @McDonalds.”

She added in a second tweet: “Also, I am very full now! But once I get an idea in my head there’s no settling until it’s been thoroughly explored!”

Jack created the burger by removing the top bun of one McPlant, and placing a whole McPlant on top, adding her own sauce recipe. The ‘Bootstrap Cook’s’ tweet has since racked up more than 1,300 likes as fans hope the fast food chain will add it to the menu.

One commenter said: “Oh god I’ve just had my tea but I could so easily eat this now - definitely needs adding.”

Another wrote: “The regular Big Mac only has one piece of cheese! The ratio is all wrong, of course there should be two!”

A third simply typed: “Just dribbled on my phone, cheers Jack.”

The McPlant burger was originally released last year following a collaboration with the LA-based Beyond Meat brand. The vegan burger is made with ‘a juicy plant-based patty’ with vegan sandwich sauce, ketchup, mustard, onion, pickles, lettuce, tomato and a vegan alternative to cheese, all sandwiched on a sesame seed bun.

Alone, the burger costs £3.39, or £5.09 as a medium meal. To make your own Big MacPlant, you’d need to buy two burgers, best ordered as a meal and a single, to benefit from the addition of fries and a drink, costing £8.48 in total.

The vegan burger is cooked separately from other McDonald’s burgers and sandwiches using dedicated utensils, and took years to develop before hitting the menu last October.
