Campaign Lessons Ahead Of Super Tuesday

Joe Biden looks focused.

With Super Tuesday just around the corner, it's crucial for campaigns to reflect on the lessons learned from recent events. In the Michigan primary, there was significant discussion about the uncommitted vote against President Biden. However, the impact of this vote may not be as substantial as some perceive.

In the Michigan primaries, the uncommitted vote garnered 13%, compared to 11% in 2012 when there was no significant campaign against the incumbent president. While there was a notable turnout for uncommitted voters this time, it coincided with high turnout for President Biden, indicating that the uncommitted vote may not signal a major issue for the President.

Despite speculation that President Biden may be facing challenges from the left within his party, data suggests otherwise. Biden maintains a strong lead over Trump among Democrats, particularly very liberal voters, with a significant 97-point margin. His support among somewhat liberal Democrats remains high at 87 points, but a decline is observed among moderate Democrats, dropping from 85 to 73 points.

Another factor to consider is voter enthusiasm, particularly in light of Biden's handling of the Gaza war. Data shows that very liberal Democrats remain highly motivated to vote, with 73% expressing extreme motivation both before and after the Gaza war. However, a slight decrease in enthusiasm is noted among other Democrats, potentially impacting voter turnout.

Furthermore, Biden's challenge lies in appealing to independent voters and moderate Democrats. While Biden secured an 11-point lead over Trump among independents in 2020, recent polls indicate a tighter race, with Trump holding a three-point advantage. This shift underscores the importance of Biden's appeal to the middle ground of the political spectrum.
