Cammy Devlin explains Lionel Messi shirt swap moment as Hearts star says 'why not' in incredible exchange

Cammy Devlin took a 'why not?' attitude when approaching Lionel Messi for his shirt after a World Cup clash.

The Hearts star hit the jackpot when he exchanged shirts with the Argentina superstar after Australia were knocked out of the World Cup by the South American side despite progressing out of the group stages in Qatar. Devlin, who was called up alongside Jambos buddies Nathaniel Atkinson and Kye Rowles, never managed to make an appearance for the Socceroos in Qatar.

But the youngster did make it a tournament to remember, as a clip posted on social media showed the midfielder exchanging shirts and congratulations with one of the greatest of all time. Devlin has now revealed his father took the shirt back to Scotland for him and admits he took a chance when it presented itself.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, he said: "I made sure my Dad had it on his carry-on, not underneath, just in case something happened. I went to console all the boys first and then shook Messi’s hand and no one had said anything, so I just tried my luck and he said ‘I’ll see you inside,’ and that’s what happened.

“I definitely wanted the other boys to have the opportunity first but no one took it, so I thought, ‘why not?’"
