‘Please, lie down,’ the therapist, Eva, guides her hand towards a heated slab of stone. I’m stepping into my first ever Hammam ‘full-body purifying treatment’, in the five-star Camiral resort in Girona.
After a false start (what I’d thought was a hairnet was, in fact, a pair of ‘spa’ pants) I duly follow instruction. Eva pours warm water over me whilst scrubbing, kneading and soothing away the stress of a near-missed flight, with UK-side train cancellations. And yet, despite my attempts to surrender into her nurturing hands, my mind flitters to my teenage son and whether this trip together, born out of childcare logistics, was going to be less wellness and more strategic parenting manoeuvres.
