Camilla makes first appearance since Queen's extraordinary statement backing her as Queen

The Duchess of Cornwall has made her first public appearance since the Queen expressed her "sincere wish" for her to become Queen Consort.

Camilla was welcomed by children waving Union flags at Roundhill Primary School in Bath, where she toured classrooms and joined a range of lessons.

As she arrived at the school, the smiling duchess stopped to chat and wave to the youngsters leaning over the low blue school gates.

Waving at one, she remarked: “Hi. What’s your name? Nice to see you.”

The duchess then joined three-year-olds in a Language for Life class in the Sunbeams early years room, and 10-years-olds from the Eco Team for tree planting for the Queen’s Green Canopy.

She also chatted to youngsters making fruit smoothies, visited a reading group and dropped in on Laurel Class during maths.

It is the first time the 74-year-old duchess had been out on royal duty since the Queen's extraordinary statement on Saturday night.

When Camilla wed Prince Charles in 2005, a statement said she intended to use the title Princess Consort, rather than Queen Consort, when her husband becomes King.

It followed low popularity ratings after she was thrust into the spotlight when it was revealed she had been having an affair with Charles during his marriage to Princess Diana.

However, following rising public opinion, the Queen issued an extraordinary statement on the eve of her Platinum Jubilee on Saturday saying it was her "sincere wish" for Camilla to be Queen.

The monarch said: I remain eternally grateful for, and humbled by, the loyalty and affection that you continue to give me.

"And when, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service."

Later, Charles released a statement where he paid tribute to his "inspiring" mother and admitted he is "deeply conscious" of her wish for Camilla to become his Queen Consort when he takes the throne.

He said: "On this historic day, my wife and I join you all in congratulating Her Majesty The Queen on the remarkable achievement of serving this nation, the realms and Commonwealth for seventy years.

“The Queen’s devotion to the welfare of all her people inspires still greater admiration with each passing year.

“We are deeply conscious of the honour represented by my mother’s wish."
