In the world of romantic comedies, Camila Mendes and Archie Renaux are making a splash with their latest film, Upgraded. In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Mendes, 29, and Renaux, 26, shared their experience working together to bring this heartwarming love story to life.
Chemistry is key in any rom-com, and Mendes believes it is what made the romantic comedies from the '90s so beloved. She explained, 'There was a time when people actually did chemistry readings, and I think that still happens [...] I haven't been in one in a long time.' Mendes and Renaux formed a strong connection even before meeting in person, thanks to text messages exchanged through their shared manager. This laid the foundation for a good dynamic and rapport when they started filming.
Virtual chats played a crucial role in helping the duo find their groove once filming began. Renaux shared that being a bit silly and playful helped break the ice and build rapport, allowing them to quickly get to know one another. Mendes added, 'When I realized that Archie is the same [in teasing and poking fun], I was like, 'Okay, this is perfect,' because then it shows in the characters.'
Upgraded follows the story of Ana, an art intern played by Mendes, who embarks on a last-minute work trip to London after getting an invite from her intimidating boss, portrayed by Marisa Tomei. On the flight, Ana meets William, a handsome stranger played by Renaux, and the two embark on a transcontinental romance.
Mendes not only stars in Upgraded but also serves as an executive producer. This milestone moment in her career has been years in the making, as she rose to stardom through projects like Riverdale, Palm Springs, and Do Revenge. Reflecting on her journey, Mendes shared, 'Being on Riverdale for as long as I was really contributed to my skill set as a producer in ways that I didn't expect. I didn't go into it thinking that my creative input was really that valued. I didn't even know if I could value it myself.' However, Mendes discovered she enjoyed working behind the camera, particularly enjoying the process of problem-solving on set.
While romance fans might have noticed Mendes in other rom-coms, such as The Perfect Date, she emphasized that she didn't intentionally plan for this to be her 'rom-com era.' Mendes gravitates towards scripts that excite her and opportunities she finds compelling. For her, Upgraded combines elements of romance, workplace drama, and comedic moments, making it a blend of genres that appealed to her. She loves it when a rom-com incorporates various elements.
Mendes's next film, Música, set to be released in April, is another project where romance plays a significant role. However, she shared that it is not a straightforward rom-com and has unique aspects that set it apart.
Looking back on their time filming Upgraded, Mendes and Renaux expressed nothing but admiration for the cast and crew. They specifically praised director Carlson Young's collaborative process. Renaux stated, 'She's an actor as well, so instantly you just kind of feel like everyone's on the same level. We're all on the same page, and it just makes for a very comfortable working environment.'
The set of Upgraded provided ample freedom, allowing the cast to deliver their best performances. Mendes noted, 'It's really nice when you're also kind of working with people in a similar age group. Sometimes it feels like you're just making a movie with your friends.' This camaraderie created a comfortable and egalitarian atmosphere that fostered authentic performances.
Upgraded is now streaming on Prime Video. Mendes and Renaux's collaboration in this rom-com is breathing new life into the genre, showcasing their chemistry and talent. Their dedication and passion shine through, making Upgraded a delightful watch for fans of romance and comedy alike.
