Cameroon 0-0 Egypt (aet; 1-3 pens): Africa Cup of Nations semi-final – as it happened

Cameroon were the better side in the first half, Ngadeu hitting the junction of bar and post, but rather lost their way afterwards. Egypt had the biggest chance of the second half, Salah passing up an opportunity to round Onana and score, and will wonder how they didn’t settle things late in extra time, when Sobhi’s cross whistled through a crowded six-yard box and away from danger. Egypt were clinical during the penalty shoot-out, while Cameroon crumbled, and that was that. The big Mohamed Salah / Sadio Mane showdown it is, then! Cameroon will face Burkina Faso in the third-place match on Saturday. Nick Ames has filed his report, and you can read that by clicking below. Congratulations to Egypt, commiserations to Cameroon, and thanks for reading this MBM. Nighty night!

RESULT: Cameroon 0-0 Egypt (Egypt win 3-1 on penalties)

Egypt avenge their defeat by Cameroon in the 2017 final, and will play Senegal in the final on Sunday! Egypt cavort with glee, Cameroon crumble in teary despair.

PENALTIES: Cameroon 1-3 Egypt. N’jie has to score or Cameroon are out. He doesn’t, though, taking a two-step run-up and whipping a godawful effort wide right. The hosts are out .. and the seven-time champions are through!

PENALTIES: Cameroon 1-3 Egypt. Lashin sends Onana the wrong way, whistling his spot kick into the bottom left. Cameroon on the brink now.

PENALTIES: Cameroon 1-2 Egypt. Siliki gulps before taking his kick, and whips towards the bottom right. Gabaski guesses well, and sticks out a strong arm to stop. The hosts in bother.

PENALTIES: Cameroon 1-2 Egypt. Another defender up, Abdelmonem this time. He whips into the top right, Onana guessing incorrectly. The pressure on the hosts now.

PENALTIES: Cameroon 1-1 Egypt. Moukoudi jogs up slowly and scuffs a dreadful kick towards the bottom right. Gabaski reads it and saves with ease.

PENALTIES: Cameroon 1-1 Egypt. Zizo, who was brought on to take a spot kick, skips and rolls into the bottom right, sending Onana the wrong way. Ice cold.

PENALTIES: Cameroon 1-0 Egypt. The Cameroon captain Aboubakar is up first. He sends Gabaski the wrong way, slotting into the bottom left.

A nice moment as Aboubakar and Salah shake hands at the coin toss. Looks like Salah won the toss ... and he puts Cameroon in first.

That last Egypt chance was absurd. Sobhi diddled Tolo with ease, dropping a shoulder to reach the right-hand edge of the six-yard box. Sobhi then fizzed a mid-height cross towards Trezeguet, Zizo and Fotouh, all six yards out. You could have thrown a blanket over them. The ball somehow found the only path through the middle of them and away. Salah was also in the vicinity, hoping to benefit from any deflection. Wow. but here we go. Penalties it is. Who will make it through to a Sunday showdown with Senegal? Here we go, then!

EXTRA TIME, FULL TIME: Cameroon 0-0 Egypt

Penalties it is!

ET 30 min: Sherif, back on the bench quicksmart, looks extremely displeased with his hooking. Meanwhile we’re one extra minute away from a penalty shoot-out.

ET 29 min: We shouldn’t be going to penalties. Sobhi works his way down the right and into the box, near the touchline. He fizzes a low ball across the face of goal. There are four Egyptians in the six-yard box ... but somehow the ball evades them all! How on earth have Egypt not dramatically booked their place in the final?!

ET 28 min: Sherif, who came on 12 minutes ago, is replaced by Zizo with penalty kicks in mind.

ET 27 min: A lot of players are looking extremely tired now.

ET 25 min: The nerves are betraying everyone now. Ngadeu only just gets enough on a backpass to his keeper, very nearly letting Salah in down the right. Andre Onana comes out to deal with the situation.

ET 24 min: ... and now Ashour sends a throw-in straight to the nearest Cameroon player! There’s pressure here all right.

ET 23 min: Jean Onana, not yet up to speed having just come on, guides a simple headed pass out of play under no pressure whatsoever. Well, no physical pressure ...

ET 21 min: ... Egypt clear the second one easily enough. They try to counter upfield through Salah, but Tolo refuses to budge down the right, and the attack fizzles out.

ET 20 min: One corner leads to another, and ...

ET 19 min: Hongla is replaced by Jean Onana. The game restarts, and Siliki takes a whack from distance. The ball takes a huge deflection off a defender and sails over the bar. Gabaski was back pedalling in a panic, there, unsure of where that was dropping.

ET 18 min: The tension is palpable, so Egypt can be forgiven for taking it down a notch, stroking it around the back. They’ll be happy enough with penalties, having been through one shoot-out in this tournament already.

ET 16 min: Sherif is quickly in the thick of it, chasing after Salah’s long pass down the middle. He nearly gets to it, too, but Onana comes to the edge of his box to gather.

Cameroon get the second half of extra time underway. Egypt have made their last change, swapping out Mohamed for Sherif.

Updated

EXTRA TIME, HALF TIME: Cameroon 0-0 Egypt

Not entirely sure how this is still goalless. We’re 15 minutes from penalties, but both teams are nervous, tiring, and giving up chances.

ET 15 min +1: N’jie finds acres down the left. He crosses low. Gabaski stoops to gather and makes an awful mess of it, allowing the ball to clank off his confused head and free. Thankfully for the keeper, the ball breaks to Fathi, who hooks clear.

ET 14 min: Now it’s Egypt’s turn to go close! Sobhi threads a pass down the inside-right channel for Mohamed, who should really be taking on the shot, but instead rolls inside for Trezeguet. The attempted assist is poorly delivered, allowing Moukoudi to make a last-ditch block. Salah races in, trying to latch onto the loose ball, but can’t get there. Egypt should be ahead.

Updated

ET 13 min: Siliki has been lively since coming on. He makes good down the right and fires a wonderful low cross through the six-yard box. Aboubakar can’t keep up with play to smack home.

ET 12 min: On the bench, poor Castelletto is a study in despair. He must be wondering whether he’ll miss the final should Cameroon make it. Two people who certainly will miss the final, should Egypt make it, are Carlos Queiroz and his assistant Wael Gomaa, the former having been sent off, the latter having picked up his second yellow of the tournament.

ET 10 min: Another half-chance for Salah, just to the right of the D. He tries to steer a curler into the bottom left, but doesn’t get enough whip on the ball, which dribbles past the post.

ET 8 min: Castelletto can’t continue, and is replaced by Moukoudi. Cameroon also swap off Ekambi for Bassogog.

Updated

ET 6 min: Castelletto is back up, but has to leave the pitch for the corner. Fortunately for Cameroon, momentarily down to ten men, Trezeguet’s corner is beyond hopeless.

Updated

ET 5 min: Trezeguet has a dig now, and his shot is deflected out for a corner on the left. Before it can be taken, the doctors come on to treat the stricken Castelletto.

Updated

ET 4 min: Sobhi has a look at goal from the edge of the Cameroon D. The ball hits Tolo on the shoulder. Sobhi claims for a penalty. Full marks for chutzpah.

Updated

ET 2 min: Incidentally, there was quite a frosty atmosphere as the captains Aboubakar and Salah contested the coin toss ahead of the extra 30 minutes. No wonder given the Cameroon striker’s pre-match Shania Twain-infused comments. A marked difference to the happy exchanges between Salah and the Ivory Coast’s Serge Aurier the other week.

Egypt get the first half of extra time underway. It’s not long before El Fotouh is flying in on Ekambi. Free kick for Cameroon out on the right. Siliki loops it in. He overhits it ... and it nearly drops into the top-left corner! Gabaski, back-pedalling with his sore groin, just about had it covered, the ball landing on the top of the netting. What a start to extra time that would have been!

Upon hearing the full-time whistle, Egypt captain Salah goes up to have a chat with the referee. He’s having a wee moan, and will want to watch it, given the official’s unwillingness to put up with nonsense. But there’s no great drama, and he’s soon rallying his troops with a rousing speech. Wine for my men, we ride at dawn. Anguissa does the same job for Cameroon.

FULL TIME: Cameroon 0-0 Egypt

Extra time coming right up!

90 min +5: Now the referee books one of Queiroz’s assistants, who had questioned the award of a garden variety free kick in midfield. A sense of proportion required there.

90 min +4: Trezeguet cuts in from the left and takes a pop from distance. He sends the shot miles wide right. Salah, in space elsewhere, is not happy.

90 min +3: The corner’s no good, failing to beat the first man Aboubakar, who sends a diving header back upfield.

90 min +2: There will be four extra minutes. Egypt win a corner down the left in the second of them.

RED CARD: Queiroz (Egypt)

90 min: Sobi and Tolo go nose to nose over something and nothing. Egypt boss Queiroz sticks his neb in again, and is shown red by the referee. For a few seconds Queiroz refuses to go, and, chest out, tries to instigate a full and frank exchange of views with the ref. Thankfully he’s pulled away by one of his assistants. Off he goes down the tunnel, effing and jeffing on the way.

Updated

89 min: Two-pass moves are at a premium right now. Both sides are betraying their nerves. Nobody wants to make a crucial mistake at the end of this tense game.

87 min: Egypt coach Carlos Queiroz is booked for flapping his gums once too often. He’s been on a rolling boil all evening, for some strange reason, and the referee has had enough.

86 min: Ngamaleu, one of Cameroon’s star performers this evening, is completely out of gas. He trudges off to be replaced by N’Jie.

85 min: Egypt make a double change. Elneny and Kamal are replaced by Ashour and Lashin.

83 min: Anguissa works his way down the right and lays off to Fai, who meets the pass mid-stride on the corner of the box and lashes towards the bottom right. There’s a slight deflection, but it doesn’t hinder Gabaski, who claims with safe hands near his right-hand post.

81 min: Ekambi romps down the right, reaches the byline, and loops back towards Siliki, who prepares to lash a volley goalwards from the edge of the D. His plans are scuppered when Anguissa clumsily gets in his way. Egypt are able to clear.

79 min: Cameroon make their first change of the evening, replacing Gouet with Siliki.

77 min: El Fotouh goes down and is lumped onto a stretcher. He’s carried off ... then comes back on again. Egypt appear to be preparing a tranche of subs, however.

75 min: Ekambi has plenty of time and space, 35 yards out, but gives the ball a nervous mid-dribble clank, sending it sailing through to Gabaski. With time running out, there are a bunch of nervous players out there.

73 min: He’s good to continue, though.

72 min: So having said Gabaski was looking fit and healthy, he goes down again for more treatment. He might have taken a whack while smothering that Ekambi flash header on his line.

70 min: Anguissa drives down the middle of the park. A fine run that nearly sees him burst into the box. But he slips on the edge of the area. The ball is half cleared, whereupon it’s met by Gouet, the best part of 40 yards out. He purchases a ticket for the lottery, taking a first-time flay, connecting so sweetly that the ball whistles inches high and wide of the top-left corner. That would have been a genuine worldie.

68 min: Ngamaleu whips towards the near post. Ekambi eyebrows towards the bottom left. Gabaski - who has shown no signs of further distress since his first-half travails - gathers well down by the post.

67 min: Ngamaleu dribbles gracefully down the left, twisting, turning and eventually drawing a foul from Kamal. A free kick in a very dangerous position here, just to the left of the box.

65 min: This is getting a little scrappy now. A series of fouls. A little bit of needle. Nerves kicking in.

63 min: More admin: Sobhi comes on for Marmoush.

62 min: Some admin: Gouet and Trezeguet are both booked, respectively for a cynical trip and too much yap.

60 min: An amusing slow-motion clip of Salah reacting to that spurned opportunity. He’s on all fours, face buried in the grass. Then he rises, clutching two handfuls of turf, ripped out in a fit of anger. It was a huge chance, so you can forgive him the loss of temper. “Maybe Vincent Aboubakar has a point,” quips our man Oh. “Not impressed.”

Updated

58 min: Salah should have rounded Onana there, but take nothing away from the keeper, who did everything he possibly could to dig his team-mate Hongla out of trouble, and was rewarded for his actions. Full marks to the Ajax keeper, and indeed to Peter Oh, who pretty much called that on 28 minutes. Gotta love the MBM readership!

56 min: One corner leads to another, and Egypt blooter clear. Suddenly, thanks to an underhit Hongla backpass, Salah is clear down the right! Onana comes flying out of his box and slides. Salah should poke the ball round him and wander towards an empty net, but knocks it too close to the keeper, who hooks out for a throw! Salah puts his head in his hands, knowing he’s just passed up a gilt-edged chance!

54 min: A Cameroon free kick out on the right. Ngamaleu flings it in. El Faotouh bravely heads out for a corner from the middle of a crowded box, then crashes into Hamdi’s shoulder. For a second he looks to be in trouble, but happily it’s just a quick sting of pain and he’s up and about again.

53 min: A little time and space for Salah, just to the right of the Egypt D. He drops a shoulder to glide inside, then attempts a diagonal defence-splitter towards Trezeguet on the left. Too much on the pass, and it’s an easy claim for Onana. A better ball, and Trezeguet was in.

52 min: Anguissa blooters from distance. The ball’s already halfway to Chad.

51 min: Marmoush dances in from the left, throwing in a nutmeg on Fai as he makes his way into the box. He runs into Castelletto, who isn’t giving ground, but that’s a silky run, and more evidence of Egypt’s newly found positivity.

49 min: Salah drops a shoulder to get inside Tolo down the right, and is upended for his trouble. Egypt have clearly been told to pick up the pace a bit, as they already look far more purposeful, admittedly with the bar set low.

47 min: Trezeguet’s first act is to barrel down the left. Fai hacks him down from behind, but like Salah earlier, gets away with a booking. The free kick is whipped into the box. Mohamed rises above Ngadeu and sends a powerful header goalwards. Either side of Onana, it’s probably a goal. The header goes straight at the keeper. Better from Egypt, though.

Egypt get the second half underway, having made a half-time change. Trezeguet comes on for Soleya, a striker for a midfielder, Egypt having achieved very little in attack in the first half.

Half-time advertisements.

HALF TIME: Cameroon 0-0 Egypt

Three minutes of added time are quietly played out, and that’s the end of an eventful first half dominated by the hosts. A reminder that we’ll go to extra time and penalties this evening if necessary.

45 min: diminuendo.

43 min: Ngadeu is up and about quickly enough, but Hamdi stays down and requires some taping up. He’s taken a whack that’s drawn blood. He’ll be allowed to continue, though ... but only after he changes his blood-spattered shirt.

41 min: Ngadeu and Hamdi clash heads while contesting a header in the Egypt box. On come the doctors.

39 min: The free kick’s cut back down the right flank to Hamdi, who curls into the box from deep. Fathi wins an easy header and loops the ball towards the top right. Onana is forced to tip over, then the flag goes up - preposterously - for offside. Fathi had timed his run perfectly.

38 min: Egypt deal with the resulting free kick and counter at speed. It’s three versus three. Mohamed should send Salah free down the right but hesitates. When the ball finally comes across, Salah purchases a cheap free kick off Ngamaleu. A chance for Egypt to put something into the mixer.

37 min: Salah considers clipping Tolo, who is romping down the left, but thinks better of it. Tolo then flicks the ball over Kamal’s head and chases after it, only to be checked by the Egyptian. Into the book Kamal goes.

35 min: Egypt have achieved next to nothing in attack. They string a few passes together in the Cameroon half, only for Marmoush to carelessly take the ball out for a throw, under no pressure whatsoever.

33 min: The resulting free kick comes to nought, but the hosts come again, Ngamaleu zipping down the left and cutting back for Ekambi, who tries to scoop a shot into the top left from close range. An easy pluck for Gabaski, but it’s another fine chance for Cameroon, who are well on top.

31 min: Ekambi robs Soleya out left, and tears off down the wing. Salah, of all people, tracks back to cynically clip the Cameroon man on the heel. He really should go in the book, but superstars often get a free hit, and it’s just a foul, nothing more.

30 min: An extended lull, which will suit Egypt, who need a bit of a breather after some intense Cameroonian play.

28 min: Up the other end, Gabaski’s opposite number hasn’t had much to do. Yet. here’s Peter Oh on that subject: “Most eyes may be on Salah and Aboubakar, but I think one of the most compelling players to watch in this tournament has been the Cameroon and Ajax keeper Andre Onana. The way he comes out to throw himself at the boots of strikers to smother shots, the vigour with which he launches himself into acrobatic fingertip saves, his range of decisive distribution - all very impressive and entertaining. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up being more influential in this match than the two big-time strikers.”

26 min: Gabaski will continue for now. Egypt aren’t having much luck with their keepers in this tournament, having already lost first choice Mohamed El Shenawy to injury against Ivory Coast in the round of 16.

24 min: Ngamaleu bombs down the right but slips while attempting to check back. Fathi clears. But the hosts quickly come back at Egypt, Anguissa slinging a cross in from the same flank. Aboubakar attacks the ball, but is beaten to it by Gabaski’s brave and strong punch. Great keeping, but he’s down again, requiring more attention. It looks like a shoulder problem.

Updated

22 min: That was a scintillating period of attack from Cameroon. Egypt respond through Kamal, who sends a speculative long-distance effort bobbling harmlessly wide left.

20 min: Ngamaleu whips a low corner in from the left. Anguissa backflicks at the near post, shuttling the ball across the face of goal to Ngadeu, who is alone in the centre, six yards out! Ngadeu kicks the ball against his standing leg, and the chance is gone. How Cameroon will wish that chance fell to Aboubakar.

18 min: ... Cameroon hit the woodwork! The corner’s hit long. Ngadeu rises highest at the far stick, winning a header, six yards out. The header beats Gabaski, and for a second looks to be looping into the top-left corner, but instead crashes off the junction of bar and post. Aboubakar tries to poke the rebound home, but the ball’s deflected out for a corner on the left.

Updated

17 min: Anguissa takes his turn to drive into the box down the right. Soleya thinks he’s shepherded the ball out for a goal kick, but a corner’s awarded, and ...

15 min: A lovely full-throttle dribble by Ekambi, who bursts into the Egypt box down the inside-right channel before cutting back from the byline. Gabaski, moving more freely, smothers at his near post.

13 min: Ngamaleu swings the free kick into the mixer. Gabaski claims, but grimaces in doing so. He doesn’t look totally comfortable. Worrying for Egypt.

12 min: Aboubakar wins a cheap free kick out on the right, clipped by Fathi. There was contact, but Carlos Queiroz doesn’t agree, falling to his knees on the touchline. The referee, unwilling to put up with any pantomime dissent, comes across to deliver the Egypt coach a massive bollocking.

10 min: Elneny tries to slip Salah clear down the inside-right channel with a sliderule pass, but Ngadeu is wise to the grift and sticks out a heel to block and intercept. After a slow start, Egypt are beginning to ask a couple of questions.

9 min: Egypt suddenly pick up the pace, shuttling the ball forward in the no-nonsense style. Marmoush, on the edge of the Cameroon D, cushions the ball back to Salah, who is barrelling in from the right. Salah meets the ball first time with a powerful sidefoot, aiming for the top left. It’s high and wide, but not by much, and it wasn’t clear whether Onana would get there had it been on target.

7 min: Some space down the right for Fai. He crosses low but it’s an easy gather for Gabaski, not least because a line of four white shirts guards the front of the six-yard box. Egypt seem pretty happy to sit back and see what’s what. “So in this competition are Egypt Greece?” wonders Ian Copestake, channelling the entertainers of Euro 2004.

5 min: A quick word from our man on the scene, Nick Ames, regarding the safety measures put in place in the wake of last month’s tragedy. “All looked OK outside. I had a mad dash myself due to a late flight so had a first-hand view, only just sat down. All fairly calm under heavy direction from security, all relevant gates open etc, but what I would say is the attendance is so far very sparse as a result. It will fill up as the game progresses I expect but still seems to me like many stayed away.”

3 min: Cameroon respond to that early Salah burst with a period of probing in the Egypt final third. Probably no great surprise to say the well-drilled Egyptians hold a firm shape.

1 min: Salah spins Tolo with ease down the right. Tolo gives chase, toe-pokes the ball away from Salah, and fortunately for the hosts, Ngadeu comes across quickly to cover and shepherd the ball out of play.

Cameroon get the second semi-final under way. An amazing atmosphere. A nation expects.

The teams are out! Cameroon sport their famous green shirts, while Egypt wear second-choice white. The hosts are on a nine-game unbeaten run stretching back to last September, when they were narrowly beaten by the Ivory Coast in World Cup qualifying. They’ve won eight of those nine matches. Egypt aren’t quite as hot, having lost their opening match of this tournament against Nigeria, and scoring just four goals in five matches. But here they are, principally because they’re not giving much away; they’ve only conceded two in those five games. Clash of styles coming right up! We’ll be off once the anthems are sung.

The caption on this tweet pretty much explains it all. Volume up!

This is the first match to be played at Yaoundé’s Olembe Stadium since the tragedy before the Cameroon-Comoros match that claimed eight lives. Very happy and relieved to report that everything appears orderly today, with new security and safety measures in place. Bless the souls who went to the game but never came home.

Cameroon are unchanged from their 2-0 quarter-final win over Gambia. Vincent Aboubakar, fresh from taunting Mohamed Salah, will be hoping to add to his six-goal best-of-tournament haul.

Egypt make two changes to the team that started the 2-1 win against Morocco. Hamdi Fathi and Mahmoud Hamdi replace Ayman Ashraf and the injured Ahmed Hegazy.

Preamble

Who will face Senegal in Sunday’s final? A tough one to call, this. Cameroon have home support and the tournament’s leading scorer in Vincent Aboubakar, and they play on the front foot. Egypt are more circumspect, tactically well drilled, and boast Mohamed Salah. It’s perfectly poised, not least because Aboubakar scored the winner when these countries met in the 2017 final, and has been telling everyone who’ll listen that he’s “not very impressed” with Salah. “May the best man win!” he adds. Let’s see who that turns out to be, then. Kick off is at 7pm GMT. It’s on!
