Cameron Carter Vickers to carry Celtic form into the World Cup as Martin O'Neill insists he can stifle Harry Kane

Former Celtic boss Martin O'Neill has backed Celtic star Cameron Carter-Vickers to shine on the international stage - keeping former Tottenham teammate Harry Kane quiet as the USA look to finish ahead of England.

Carter-Vickers ' superb form under Ange Postecoglou over the last two years has been a huge reason for the Hoops' achievements in the domestic game, with the centre-back forming a good relationship with Carl Starfelt, Moritz Jenz and Stephen Welsh as Ange Postecoglou's men reclaimed the Scottish Premier title from Rangers last term. His form has been noticed by Gregg Berhalter, who called Carter-Vickers up after a three-year hiatus from the national side.

Timing could not have been better for the former Spurs star, and with the chance to impress on the biggest stage in football, former Hoops boss O'Neill has backed the 24-year-old to keep former teammate Kane quiet when the USA face England on Friday. He said: “Carter-Vickers has been brilliant at club level, and I can see him doing well in Qatar.

"After a few loan spells, he appears to have found his spiritual home at Parkhead. His defensive qualities are absolutely sound. He will know Kane well as they were team-mates at Spurs.

"So Cameron will look to put that knowledge to good use when they face each other on Friday. England have a hugely-talented squad, and Gareth Southgate does extremely well with them at tournaments.

“But it will be just one of the many games that will grab me. The World Cup is a magnificent tournament, and there will be excitement around the globe for the next four weeks."
