About 150 people have been evacuated from a North London block of flats after a loud sound was heard and a crack developed in a wall on the ninth floor.
A resident from The Combe in Munster Square, Camden, called London Fire Brigade (LFB) after hearing a loud noise within the building on Thursday evening.
Camden Council was alerted to issue at the 19 storey block of flats, and 70 households of approximately 150 people were evacuated after the damage was assessed, it said.
It added the decision to evacuate residents from the block was made together by the council and LFB at 10.30pm.
Camden Council said it has supported 50 residents overnight in Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre, with assistance from the British Red Cross.
Many residents were able to make alternate arrangements for accommodation.
A council spokesperson said: "A structural engineer was called to assess the damage before the decision to evacuate was made.
"Our officers are on site with emergency services and we are assessing the building."
Engineers were at the site on Friday and "their assessments indicate the damage appears to be isolated to the flat where the crack was reported and that it will be possible to start repairs this afternoon", they added.
The spokesperson added emergency services had since left the site.
The council-owned building is made up of a mix of tenants and leaseholders.
Councillor Richard Olszewski, Leader of Camden Council: “The safety of our residents always comes first. We worked closely with the London Fire Brigade last night to assess this issue and evacuate The Combe for residents’ safety. Our priority since then has been to ensure all residents are supported and cared for.
“I appreciate nobody wants to leave their homes in these circumstances and all residents affected will be keen to know when it will be safe to return.”
