Cambuslang Rangers one win from title but co-boss 'not counting his chickens'

Cambuslang Rangers co-boss Billy Campbell says his side have no right to think they have already wrapped up West of Scotland Football League Conference B title glory.

The Somervell Park side are now just a win against Renfrew away from clinching promotion to the top flight this Saturday ahead of the league restructuring.

It could have been sealed last weekend after they held up their end of the bargain with a comfortable 3-0 win against Glasgow United. But second-placed Gartcairn’s 2-1 success over Kello put the party on hold.

Scott Williamson netted his 49th and 50th goals of the season for Camby while Alan Reid also got in on the first half act as Campbell’s team made it 100 league goals for the season.

They might have one hand on their first title in five years, but Campbell insists that nothing is won yet.

Campbell said: “We worked hard as Glasgow United made us do so. We managed to get in 3-0 up at half-time and the second half was a bit flat truth be told.

“The tempo went out of the game but we can’t be overly critical, as we would have taken 3-0 before the game. We feel as if we took our foot off the gas a bit.

“We are pleased to have got the job done and we are now onto Renfrew this week. They had a great 3-0 win at Greenock and have won five of their last six.

“It’s another challenge there for us. We will prepare for this the same as we do for every game. We need to earn the right to win as we haven’t won anything yet.”

Campbell will keep his squad level-headed ahead of a potentially historic result on Saturday, but he knows it’s a great occasion for the Wee Gers.

He added: “Of course there will be additional excitement as we can’t say it’s just another game. But it has to be in respect of what you get from it – three points.”
