Cam Newton reportedly turned down ‘at least one deal’ in offseason

So, it seems as though the NFL really isn’t done with Cam Newton after all.

Despite popular belief, there may still be interest in the former Carolina Panthers quarterback—who remains a free agent four weeks into the 2022 campaign. As reported by Panthers beat writer Sheena Quick of FOX Sports Radio 1340 AM, Newton was offered a deal this offseason—one he, obviously, did not accept.

As Quick notes, Newton will wait out for what he believes is the right opportunity—and not necessarily just the next one. The 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player said as much back in January:

“Yes, I still do think I can play at a high level,” he stated during 2021 exit interviews. “But if an opportunity presents itself where I don’t necessarily need to play and it’s about winning, yeah, I’m willing to do that too. This point forward, I’m not coming back for no 5-12, I can tell you that now. Winning makes everything better. So to what degree am I willing to do—whether it being the starter or not—if it’s about winning, I’m with it.”

Newton has played 20 games between the Panthers and New England Patriots over the past two seasons. He completed 63.0 percent of his passes for 3,341 yards, 12 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while rushing for 822 yards and 17 more scores.
