Calvin Ramsey shirt number confirmed as 18-year-old becomes Liverpool's third summer signing

Liverpool have confirmed that Calvin Ramsay will wear the No.22 shirt after the club completed the signing of the talented right-back from Aberdeen.

The Reds revealed in a statement that the 18-year-old has signed long-term contract after passing a medical and finalising the transfer at the AXA Training Centre. Ramsay is Jurgen Klopp's third signing of the summer after Fabio Carvalho arrived on a free transfer and Darwin Nunez made the big-money switch from Benfica.

Ramsay made 39 senior appearances for The Dons, scoring once and chipping in with nine assists. He was also named the Scottish Football Writers’ Association's Young Player of the Year for 2021/22.

After impressing for Aberdeen, Ramsey has earned himself a switch to Liverpool and will team-up with Klopp's side at the start of next month for pre-season. The club announced he will also don 22 - following in the footsteps of Loris Karius who had that number last season. Andy Lonergan also wore that shirt in 2019/20.

However, no one has played in that number since Simon Mignolet almost four years ago - after he featured in the Carabao Cup third round against Chelsea in 2018. The Belgian held that jersey for his six seasons at the Reds, where he made over 150 Premier League appearances.

Other notable players to wear No.22 at Liverpool are Emiliano Insua, Titi Camara and Jamie Carragher. The shirt has been largely used by goalkeepers, though, with Scott Carson and Chris Kirkland using it.

Speaking after joining the Reds, Ramsay said: "I’m just buzzing and it’s a dream come true really to be here.

"It was a dream come true to play for Aberdeen, and now to be at one of the biggest, if not the biggest club in the world, it’s a massive achievement and I’m looking forward to trying to show the fans what I’ve got.

"Hopefully I can come in in pre-season, show everyone at the club, the staff, players what I’ve got and then we’ll see what happens from there."

He added: "There’s been a lot of young players that have played – the likes of Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and Harvey [Elliott] as well, there’s a lot more.

"There’s obviously a pathway here – that’s one of the reasons I chose it as well. It’s not just a massive club, they give young players chances in the first team.

"So if I can come in in pre-season, put my mark down, then there’s no reason why I can’t push to get in the first-team squad."
