Calvin Bassey has been slaughtered again after his underwhelming start at Ajax with Dutch hero Wim Kieft claiming watching him play "hurts his eyes". Rangers sold the giant defender to the Amsterdam club in the summer for a bumper £19 million fee, but he's had a ropey start to his career in the Netherlands after Ajax's poor beginning to the season which culminated in a 6-1 home hammering by Napoli in the Champions League.
Marco van Basten criticised Ajax's transfer policy last week and former Ajax hero Marciano Vink pinpointed Bassey's poor distribution. And now former Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and Torino star Kieft, who helped the Netherlands win Euro 88, has attacked the former Ibrox defender's play in his role as a media pundit.
He said: " Calvin Bassey playing football hurts my eyes. Apart from his lack of quality on the ball, he is above all very rash. Physically, he is fine, but Ajax cannot play the dominant game they like with him in the team."
And his colleague, Freek Jansen, reckons Rangers should be laughing all the way to the bank. He explained: "With Bassey, you can already conclude that Ajax has paid far too much for him. Given his current qualities, it would have made more sense to pay five to ten million Euros for the transfer. He still has a long way to go when it comes to football, but maybe that will still happen.”
