Calvin Bassey is ‘set’ to undergo a medical at Ajax as he prepares to leave Rangers for a club record fee.
The Dutch champions are to said to have agreed a fee of €22million with the Ibrox club and multiple reports claim that the Nigerian will complete the necessary pre-transfer tests shortly. Bassey was left out of today's squad to play Blackpool as the Gers won 2-1 in the sunshine at Bloomfield Road.
And it looks like he’s played his last game in royal blue. English Premier League outfit Brighton were also hopeful of stirring a deal to sign the former Leicester City youngster, but their £16million offer wasn't enough to tempt the Scottish Cup winners to the table. Ajax seemed to be the favourites from the outset and look like they've got their man, After losing Argentinian defender Lisandro Martinez to manchester United, head coach Alfred Schreuder identified Bassey as his top target to replace him.
Player and manager spoke on the phone earlier this week, with the Amsterdam boss impressed with what he heard from Bassey. It appease the feeling was mutual, with the 22-year-old keen to continue his career in the Eredivisie. A sell-on clause will also be included, with Rangers set to cash in once again if Bassey moves on again in the future.
And he’ll also get a crack at the Champions League group stages. Ajax, like Rangers’ rivals Celtic, are straight in as a result of lifting the Dutch title last season. Giovanni van Bronckhorst ’s side have two qualifying rounds to negotiate before they can share in the riches on offer from playing in Europe’s premier competition until Christmas.
And it seems as if they’ll have to try and get there without Bassey. He shone in their run to the Europa League final last year before eventually losing on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt. HIs displays on the continent no doubt caught Ajax’s eye, filling in at centre back as the Gers were forced to reshuffle at the back due to injuries.
