Calvin Bassey Rangers transfer windfall on hold as Ajax knock back bumper Premier League bid for struggling defender

Ajax have turned down a bumper offer for beleaguered defender Calvin Bassey from an unnamed English club, with Rangers missing out on a potential windfall of £2m.

It has been reported the Eredivisie side are holding out for a whopping £35m for the services of the Nigerian star after Rangers sold their prize asset last summer for £19 million but they also insisted upon a ten per cent sell-on fee if Ajax were to sell Bassey. Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side netted a club record fee received in the process, with Bassey previously revealing he 'turned down' offers to make the jump to England in favour of Amsterdam.

Bassey is preparing for the Dutch Cup Final today against PSV Eindhoven, but the club have had a nightmare campaign by their standards and are currently third in the league. The former Leicester City player has been hit with plenty of criticism in the Netherlands for his style of play and has had to settle for a place on the bench recently under manager John Heitinga.

But respected Dutch pundit Mike Verweij has revealed that Ajax have turned down an offer of 23 million Euros [£20.3m] from an English Premier League club...which will be a huge frustration to Rangers.

He told a podcast: "To my amazement, a bid of 23 million euros has been received for Calvin Bassey. It's from the English Premier League. I don't know which club.

"And by the way, some people at Ajax think that he can be sold one day for 40 million Euros. I don't know which club it was, although it won't have been one in the top five.

"On the one hand, there's a lot of constructive criticism that has come in for Calvin Bassey this season. But also, if you look at him defensively, I can imagine there's interest from clubs. And for English clubs, he would be a good signing too because of the homegrown rules."
