Calvin Bassey an example to not judge new Rangers players too early, says John Bennett

Calvin Bassey Rangers example highlighted to defend new slow starters at Ibrox

RANGERS fans only need to look at Calvin Bassey's meteoric rise as a lesson in not judging new players too soon.

That's according to the club's deputy chairman John Bennett.

In a sit down with RangersTV, the club chief admits he's heard a lot of noise regarding some of Giovanni van Bronckhorst's new signings this summer.

Other than Antonio Colak and Tom Lawrence, the others have made a slow start to life at Ibrox.

But that is far from an issue for Bennett and others in the hierarchy at Ibrox.

The experienced businessman instead pointed out that Bassey, who was sold to Ajax for £20million this summer, was heavily written off midway through his first season at Ibrox.

He said: "I know there's a lot of noise about this just now, off the back of those two unacceptable performances, in particular. There is quite a lot of noise - some of it justified and alway some of it I think less justified.

"I learned long ago not to judge a new Rangers player within weeks. That goes way back in my life as a Rangers supporter.

"I've some more players take time to settle than those who have hit the ground running.

"I looked at Tom Lawrence and saw a player who had hit the ground running. Then events happen. Injury.

"Others haven't hit the ground running for various reasons.

"We're six weeks into a season. I won't judge a football player who comes to Rangers within that period of time. I've learned to wait a bit longer.

"We haven't seen enough of them. I think we will see them.

"If you take another young player we've signed, Yilmaz, yes we've spent significant money on that transfer, but we've signed him for five years, not five weeks.

"I won't wait five years to judge him but nor will I do it after five weeks.

"If we need a very recent reminder of why we shouldn't players early in their Rangers career I suggest Calvin Bassey.

"I give you St Mirren vs Rangers in the cup. I remember a lot of noise around young Calvin. Negative noise. Questioning him.

"Look at him now. By the way, when it comes to Calvin, a finer young gentlemen you're unlikely to meet. He represented this club on and off the pitch impeccably."
