Calum Butcher assesses Rangers attacking threat ahead of Motherwell clash

CALUM BUTCHER has rolled back the years and stepped back on the park after moving from midfield to defence with Motherwell.

And the Englishman knows he will need to be at his best to keep the Rangers attack quiet as the Steelmen aim for a historic win this afternoon.

Butcher started out in the game as a centre-half as he emerged through the ranks at Ipswich and Southend and won himself a move to Tottenham Hotspur early in his career.

He has slotted into that position on his return to Scottish football and will be a key part of Stuart Kettlewell's side in the closing stages of the campaign.

Motherwell head into their meeting with Rangers unbeaten in their last four fixtures and the Lanarkshire outfit could yet make a late bid for the top six this term.

Victory over Rangers would be a significant step forward in that regard but it will be no easy task as Michael Beale gets set to unleash the in-form trio of Antonio Colak, Ryan Kent and Fashion Sakala at Fir Park.

Butcher said: "Of course you want to play against the best players in the league and see how well you can do against them. It is something you are up for each week.

"I think they (Colak and Alfredo Morelos) are both different players, they play in different ways, but they have both got really strong attributes. They are massive for Rangers and how they want to play but they have got players all over the pitch that can hurt you.

"It is not just those two, there is a lot of quality all over the pitch. It is about us sticking to our game plan and how we want to set up and hopefully we can go and get a result.

"There are a lot of top players up there and that is why they are near the top of the league. That is why they are at Rangers.

"The players they have, players that come off the bench, they can make a massive impact on games. But it is about us and what we do in the game."
