Callum Wilson sends 'confident' message as Newcastle United reach Carabao Cup final

Callum Wilson insists Newcastle United will be heading to Wembley Stadium to face Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final in 'confident' mood.

Newcastle defeated Southampton 2-1 at St James' Park in the second leg, and prevailed 3-1 on aggregate over both legs to set-up their first final since 1999, and first League Cup final in 47 years.

The Magpies eliminated Tranmere Rovers, Crystal Palace, AFC Bournemouth and Leicester City respectively in the previous rounds. They will face Man United at Wembley at the end of February, with the Red Devils booking their place in the final with a 5-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on aggregate.

Wilson described the atmosphere at St James' Park on Tuesday as one of the best he's ever experienced, and is feeling optimistic ahead of the final.

"It's a very long time since we've been in a final. A long time since the club's won something. So we'll be going there confident and trying to make sure that we are the ones lifting the trophy at the end of it," he told The Footballer's Football Podcast.

"Overall, in the two legs, Southampton were tough opponents but we were deserved winners. It was a good performance at St James' Park. You know what it's like when it's a night game, the atmosphere is rocking, and everyone got behind the team. The atmosphere was unreal. It's probably up there with one of the best since I've played here at the club."
