Callum Wilson hints at £45m plan Eddie Howe may later unleash at Newcastle for the first time

Callum Wilson has 'no doubts' that he could play together up front with Chris Wood after watching the Newcastle United striker do a 'great job' in his absence.

Although Wood has yet to get off the mark just yet, following his £25m move from Burnley last month, the New Zealand international has given the Magpies a focal point with his presence and ability to win the ball in the air.

Wood has led the line on his own so far, but Eddie Howe has previously said that the new signing could eventually play alongside Wilson as part of a £45m strike force - even if they are 'very different players'.

Wilson looks set to be out with a calf injury until the final few games of the campaign, but the number nine has been supporting his team-mate from the stands at St James' Park in the meantime.

"He's probably kicking himself that he's not scored yet but you know what it's like," Wilson told the Footballer's Football podcast. "One will drop for you and then he'll hit the ground running.

"For the way that the team has been functioning and the way the team has been playing, the formation that we've set out over the last few weeks has been working and that's been with one striker so credit to him.

"He's been doing a great job. When I get back, it's not going to be easy just to walk back in and the manager is probably going to look at ways to try and get us both into the team and things like that.

"As a striker, as a player, all you can focus on is yourself in the present moment. For me, it's just getting fit and then we'll cross that bridge when it comes to it, really.

"I have no doubts in playing together as a two, playing together as a one. It's just whatever the manager decides. When we get there, obviously, you want to be a part of it."
