St Johnstone manager Callum Davidson has confirmed Dundee United’s interest in Zander Clark.
But, wherever the highly-rated goalkeeper ends up in the summer, the Perth boss is sure his No.1 can play a starring role in the coming weeks.
Saints sit in the relegation play-off spot, five points clear of Scottish Premiership basement boys Dundee.
Clark is out of contract at the end of the season and Davidson expects more clubs than Dundee United to be keen.
“United have made contact,” Davidson said. “We knew there would be interest in Zander.
“He’ll have options in Scotland and down south because he’s a very good goalkeeper who has performed unbelievably well.
“He’ll get a good move and obviously I’m hoping it’s on the back of more good performances for St Johnstone.
“He’s dealt with this situation all year basically. It’s clearly never been a problem – as you can see with his form - and it won’t be now.
“I’ve got no issues with Zander at all. Hopefully he gets the move he deserves.
“If clubs do their homework they’ll see what a top goalkeeper he is.
“He’s a great size, has real presence. His all round game is excellent. It’s not just one thing he’s very good at.
“I think that makes him well suited to English football.”
Davidson admits Saints’ performance in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to nearest rivals St Mirren fell deeply into the disappointing category.
He said: “We got into positions where we should have kept the ball better and we ended up chasing the game by not doing that.
“Our quality on the ball wasn’t there. We need to show a lot more of that in our remaining games.
“We’d been playing well in the main but that performance wasn’t good enough.
“We were trying to put the team above us under pressure but we didn’t perform.
“That was the most disappointing aspect because we’d worked really hard to get in that position. We didn’t really turn up as a group.
“But we’ve got other games to put it right. We can’t let that game put us off course.”
Perth fans weren’t at all pleased with the showing and Davidson understands their frustration.
He said: “I can understand it because I was as frustrated as them. We all were.
“Players, staff, fans and directors were all frustrated.
“We need them (the fans) to stay with us. It’s obviously been a really hard season for a lot of reasons.
“This is the time when we need the supporters to stay with us and help us.”
