Calls for larger bus on Derry route after woman with pram couldn't get a seat

Calls have been made for Translink to provide a larger bus on a popular Derry route after complaints over capacity issues.

Sinn Fein councillor Patricia Logue said she had personally taken the Foyle Metro bus service to Creggan twice last week from Foyle Street.

It's understood on one occasion, a mother with a pram and two young children had no seat until the Translink driver intervened, asking people to move back.

The route travels through Derry city centre to Bishop Street, the Brandywell, Creggan and Bogside areas seven days a week.

“On the first occasion there was absolutely no room for anybody using the service after leaving Foyle Street," said Cllr Logue.

“This route which was amalgamated some years ago serves a large section of the population. And with the rising costs of living, more and more people will be returning to public transport.

“Also with local schools returning after summer holidays the increase in usage is inevitable. I have now written to Translink to request that a larger bus be used on the Creggan route. I hope they will look at the situation as quickly as possible."

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Translink said: ‘‘Translink is currently monitoring passenger numbers travelling on the Foyle Metro Creggan service and will adjust services and capacity accordingly as required.

‘‘We are grateful for the ongoing patience and understanding of our customers on this service while this review is being undertaken.’’
