Calls for CCTV and lighting after dog walker attacked in Arnold park

An online petition has launched calling for CCTV and additional lighting to be put in place in a park after a dog walker was attacked.

It comes after a dog walker was left with serious injuries to her face after she was attacked while walking her pet on Killisick Recreation Ground in Arnold.

The woman was struck several times to her face and suffered facial injuries, but did not see the attacker.

It happened at around 7pm on Friday (January 14), and police are investigating the incident.

The attack has led to an online petition being launched, calling for CCTV in the park and for better lighting in the area.

The petition states: "We as the community want to see more CCTV put in place around the Killisick field and for more lighting.

"Far too many attacks (are) happening and this may well deter these attackers.

"Nobody should feel vulnerable and scared to walk their dog, something needs to be done - that is why I'm urging the public to sign the petition to have a voice and speak out.

"Let's prevent this from happening to others."

Those who have signed the petition have voiced their concerns about the area, but some park users have said they still feel safe and don't necessarily think CCTV is necessary.

Karen Burgess, 56, who was walking her dog and lives close to the field, said: "I think CCTV is a step too far, it's a bit over the top - I've lived in the area for more than 20 years, and I've always felt safe.

"But better lighting could be useful if it say goes off at a certain time.

"I can't say I've ever felt unsafe at all when using the park, especially when walking around the edges.

"The incident came completely out of the blue, I really do feel sorry for the lady as it is completely out of character for the area and I hope it's a one-off, it's the first I've heard of anything happening like that around here."

Jessica Jones, 31, who was also walking her dog on the park and lives nearby, said: "I feel safe here, I walk her on my own at night - but then again, I do have a dog.

"I don't think CCTV cameras are needed, I've never been in a situation where I've felt uncomfortable or anything.

"You don't usually see many people around here."

Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John Clarke, said: "We're aware of the terrible incident at Killisick Park and are working with Nottinghamshire Police while they investigate what happened and hopefully catch the person that carried out this shocking assault.

"Thankfully, incidents of this kind in this park are very rare, however, we have increased our Neighbourhood Warden patrols to support residents living nearby.

"We have CCTV cameras in a number of areas in the borough which have all successfully reduced incidents of crime, anti-social behaviour and other unwanted activities.

"The cameras are installed with consultation with residents, councillors and the Police to make sure we are placing them in the best possible areas.

"Any requests for CCTV are considered and, if it is clear that it is needed, we will do everything we can to get them installed.

"We have recently installed cameras in Carlton, Arnold and Gedling Country Park and have plans for more to be installed in other parts of Gedling as part of our commitment to reduce anti-social behaviour and the fear of crime in our borough."

Nottinghamshire Police was contacted for further comment.

Police investigations continue, and anyone who has any information about the assault is urged to call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident 603 of January 14.

Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
