Calls for border security intensify as Democrats urge action

President urged to face reality and secure the border.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott's military department has taken steps to fortify Shelby Park, one of the busiest crossings along the U.S. southern border, in an effort to control the influx of migrants. The park has seen a decrease in migrant crossings recently, but authorities expect numbers to rise once warmer weather arrives.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) stated that the current low number of crossings is likely due to seasonal factors. However, as temperatures increase, they anticipate a surge in the number of migrants attempting to cross the border. In response, additional fencing and razor wire have been put in place by the military, and Texas state troopers have been arresting migrants who tamper with the razor wire, charging them with criminal trespassing.

To enhance surveillance and deter unlawful border crossings, Texas military two-man boats now patrol the river from morning until evening. These measures aim to address the concerns raised by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, who recently highlighted the need to secure the border and make significant changes.

During a press conference, Chairman McCaul revealed that even President Biden acknowledged the need to secure the border, considering it broken and in need of fixing. He emphasized that both Republicans and Democrats must work together to address the ongoing crisis. McCaul's sentiments were echoed by Texas Democrat Henry Quaylor, who emphasized the importance of collaboration to bring about meaningful change.

Apart from the issue of border security, the press conference also focused on the problem of drug smuggling into the United States from Mexico. Chairman McCaul and other congressional members are currently in Mexico City, meeting with President Obrador and other Mexican officials to discuss ways to stem the flow of fentanyl into the United States.

The influx of migrants raises concerns about the availability of affordable housing for U.S. citizens. Quaylor emphasized that allowing millions of people to enter the country necessitates finding suitable accommodations for them, which may unjustly impact those who have been waiting for affordable housing.

Overall, the situation at the southern border continues to evolve. While seasonal factors may have temporarily decreased migrant crossings, Texas authorities are taking proactive measures to fortify the area and ensure border security. The President's acknowledgment of the need for significant changes, alongside bipartisan calls for collaboration, highlights the urgency of finding effective solutions to this ongoing challenge.
