Calls for action at 'death trap' crossroads after crashes in Sutton Bonington

There are calls for something to be done at a "death trap" junction in a Nottinghamshire village which has seen multiple crashes. The crossroads, in Sutton Bonington, links three roads on the outskirts of the village - College Road, Station Road and Melton Lane.

In March 2021, a driver had to be cut free after their car overturned in a crash - with pictures taken at the scene showing the damage done to a Peugeot after the collision. A year later, fire crews were also called to another crash involving a lorry and a car, in which one person was hospitalised. A lorry had gone off the road and into a nearby hedge

Locals say crashes at the crossroads are a regular occurrence because signage for vehicles coming from the Station Road and Melton Lane approaches isn't clear enough that they need to give way to traffic going along College Road.

Charles Underwood, 72, who is retired, said: "I know just the one you mean and yes I think it is quite dangerous. There was a nasty crash there not too long ago, actually. There's not really much of a footpath on one side either, and some people walk there, when you're quite close to the road - which makes it more dangerous as well.

"If there's a crash here, a bad one, it's more often than not there. But then I don't know what to do to make it better because a lot of it might come down to bad driving. I've never had a crash there."

One Sutton Bonington resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told Nottinghamshire Live: "It's a death trap. There are accidents there all the time, it seems.

"I think it's a worry for a lot of people who live here. People drive very fast coming in and out of the village. Speak to most people who live here and they either know someone whose had an accident or a near miss there, or they have themselves."

In October last year, the University of Nottingham put out a message to staff and students asking for them to take "extra care" at the crossroads after recent accidents there. They warned people of a "blind spot" due to the fall of the road and advised them to look and then look again when approaching the give way signs - the university's sport campus is located in the village.

A petition calling on changes to be made at the junction has been signed by more than 700 people, calling on the council to make changes there before another serious accident occurs.

The petition states: "The cars do not have to be breaking speed limits to cause serious collisions. There have been cases where cars have been catapulted onto pedestrian areas, therefore also putting, not just drivers and cyclists, but walkers at risk.

"We simply cannot keep waiting for something to be done….how many more serious injuries or fatalities do we have to witness before the Borough or County Council take action? There is huge concern from local villages, commuters and students about this hazardous cross-roads.

"Before any more serious accidents or fatalities occur, we ask that measure are put in place as a matter of urgency to reduce or prevent the dangers that this cross-roads currently presents to our local community."

Nottinghamshire County Council’s Head of Highways and Transport, Gary Wood, said: “Road safety is a high priority for us and we take concerns which have been raised about the crossroads at Sutton Bonington extremely seriously.

“We will be introducing measures to improve safety at the site for road users and pedestrians, including enhanced signage and markings on the approaches to the junction.

“We are also carrying out a feasibility study at the location to establish if more significant changes could be implemented.”
