'Calling your parents': P-plater busted driving 189km/h

Caught speeding at 189km/h, a teenage P-plater has received a sobering warning after being pulled over on a major highway in the early hours.

"Dude, we're going to be calling your parents," a police officer tells the 17-year-old boy.

Two police officers vented their frustration at the teenager after he was caught travelling almost double the speed limit in a 100km/h zone on the Sunshine Motorway north of Brisbane about 12.13am on Friday.

In a video released by Queensland Police on Wednesday, an officer approaches the teen's car with the 189km/h reading clearly visible on his handheld speed radar.

"Eighty-nine kilometres over the speed limit - what could go wrong ya reckon?," the officer asked.

Police then say they are going to call his parents but give him the option to give them a ring, telling him to "go home and have a long look at yourself".

"I'd probably wake your mum up when you get home and sit down and talk to her about what happened tonight," an officer said.

"I'll bet my last dollar that your mum will sit in bed and cry when you tell her how quick you're going tonight - I'll bet on it."

An officer tries to explain to the teen just how fast he was going, saying he was travelling 51 metres per second when they spotted him.

"So you are travelling half a football field every second ... your stopping distance would be massive," the teen is told.

During the exchange the 17-year-old tries to explain why he was driving without P-plates on his car, saying they "literally fell off".

"I'm not shocked at 189km/h," an officer replied.

"You're going to lose your licence for a long period of time and to be honest if I had my choice, I agree with that."

The teen later copped a $1854 fine for speeding, lost eight demerit points and had his license suspended for six months.

He was also fined $589 for not displaying his P-plates and driving a defective vehicle.
