Helen George has issued a defiant response to cruel critics after they attack her for being pregnant while filming the new series of CAll The Midwife.
Helen, who stars as Trixie Franklin in the much loved BBC drama, is in her much loved role for its 11th run but, on Sunday night, had to defend herself after some viewers took exception to the fact she was clearly pregnant on screen, while her character isn't with child.
After seeing some of the horrendous comments, Helen, who competed on Strictly in 2015, took to Twitter to post: "I’ve seen too many ridiculous comments about my pregnancy whilst filming @CallTheMidwife1 ( also thank you for the lovely comments!)"
She added: "Women get pregnant, our bodies change. But we have the right to work if we choose to do so. How about just supporting it, and don’t question it?"
One of the tweets, from an account which has now been deleted, read: "It's very unprofessional in my opinion, it's not as if it's filmed all year round.
"It's a short window. She should quit if she wants to pregnant during filming. It ruins the continuity and aesthetics of the show."
Helen's co star Olly Rix was quick to condemn the tweet, reacting: "Take a bow, Fanny. Dumbest f**king tweet of the night."
A second critic wrote: "i love that helen george is so obviously pregnant like they really are trying their best to hide it but it’s not working too well"
Backing Helen, who gave birth to daughter Lark in November, one of her followers told her: "Was obvious you were pregnant as you were absolutely blooming. However, this did not distract from the story line and we all look forward to your return for the next series. Love your character."
A second replied: "It seems some people want to control when you can get pregnant, and make nasty comments. I personally think working while filming your scenes is a credit to your professionalism and dedication. We’re sending you lots of love."
And a third commented: "Good grief people do say some awful things on here! It doesn't distract from the stories at all, I'm too 'in the moment', and you look beautiful anyway. Tonight's episode was outstanding as usual, BTW, as were the whole cast!"
