Call the Midwife viewers not sure they can 'cope' as they call BBC 'poor' for announcement at end of penultimate episode

Call the Midwife viewers have said they're not sure if they will be able to 'cope' as they complained about a major change announced at the end of the latest episode. Fans' favourite nuns and nurses were back on screen on Sunday night (February 12) as the penultimate episode of the 12th series aired on BBC One.

The episode saw a string of characters fall ill with Hepatitis after Dr Patrick Turner noticed an upward trend in confirmed cases. It started after Sister Monica Joan was seen comforting a pregnant mother who had gone into labour while visiting the latest clinic. The beloved character, however, seemed increasingly confused when she reminisced with Rosemary Mason as she helped deliver the mum's first child.

However, she appeared to incorrectly remember the birth as a boy and not a little girl. Later, when back at home with her newborn and after a visit from Mrs Tuner, Mrs Mason was diagnosed with Hepatitis, an infection that Sister Monica Joan also contracted and was later seen distressed in bed with Sister Julienne and Nurse Crane by her side.

Diagnosing her with Hepatitis, the term used to describe inflammation of the liver which is usually the result of a viral infection or liver damage, Dr Turner added: "I’m afraid we just have to hope she can fight the infection off. I won’t pretend her age isn’t a concern." Nurse Crane also later echoed his sentiments as she feared Sister Monica Joan's age may work against her recovery.

The episode ended with the Sister distressed before being paid a visit by Cyril Robinson, who had not long returned from a visit to Jamaica to see his wife, Lucille. It was also revealed that Sister Monica Joan wasn't wrong in suggesting Mrs Mason had a baby boy as she later admitted to having to give up her son before meeting her now husband.

However, it was then announced by the BBC announcer as the credits rolled that viewers are going to have to wait an extra week for the final episode of the series, meaning they'll have to wait to see if Sister Monica Joan can recover from her bout of ill health.

This is because Call the Midwife has been bumped from the TV schedule on Sunday (February 19) due to live coverage of the BAFTA Film Ceremony. In a tweet from the show's official account, the change was also confirmed The tweet read: "NEWS!! Our #CalltheMidwife Series 12 finale has been delayed due to the live BAFTA Film Ceremony next Sunday!

"The final episode of Series 12 will now air in TWO weeks time – Sunday 26 February at 8pm. So put the champagne on ice – we promise you an unforgettable event…" The tweet also featured a photo featuring Mrs Turner, with the caption: "Ladies and gentlemen, the bride will be delayed," appearing to refer to the wedding of Nurse Trixie Franklin and Matthew.

But fans aren't happy about the 'poor' decision to cancel Call the Midwife altogether. @Chelsea14878 posted: "WHAT?!?! They can’t make me wait 2 weeks for finale!!!! #CallTheMidwife." @EllieBondo moaned: "We have to wait 2 weeks! Stuff the BAFTAs! Put it on BBC2 #CallTheMidwife."

@WilliamsonAnge tweeted: "We have to wait two weeks to find out what happens to Sister Monica Joan??? Poor show BBC....poor show...#CallTheMidwife." @Juliedewdrops shared: "I won’t be happy if they are going to kill Sister Monica Joan off, AND they’re making us wait 2 weeks now and I’m not sure I can cope to be fair #CallTheMidwife."

@AliceMagee complained: "We have to wait TWO WEEKS to find out if Sister Monica Joan is okay, and for Trixie's wedding!? This is not fair #CallTheMidwife." @CSRizzoli23 added: "Honestly i swear Sister Monica Joan has got to recover or i will have a nervous breakdown. I'm going to be worried for 2 weeks now while they make us wait #CallTheMidwife Please dont let her die, you cant do this to us. I will never forgive you if she doesn't survive."

However, there is good news for fans of the drama as the BC has confirmed two more series of the long-running hit show. The announcement of series 14 and 15 means that Call the Midwife will now be on air until 2026. Heidi Thomas, creator and writer of Call The Midwife, said: “I’m overjoyed by the news that the doors of Nonnatus House will be open for a few more years!

"Call The Midwife is the pride and joy of all who work on it, but it’s our fantastic, loyal audience that matters most. We are a family behind the scenes, on the screen, and in front of the telly, and I’m thrilled that we’re all heading into the 1970’s together."
