Call the Midwife's new nun Sister Veronica to make debut as new series starts

Fresh from its very heartwarming and much watched Christmas special last weekend, Call The Midwife returns to the BBC for a new series on Sunday night and with a new face in the form of Sister Veronica.

Millions tuned into the popular drama after their dinner on Christmas Day, to see the residents of Poplar take part in talent show Poplartunity Knocks, to raise money for those affected by the horrifying train crash that rocked the community and see adored character Trixie, played by Helen George, make her return, to then be proposed to in the closing moments of the 90 minute festive episode.

As credits rolled on the show's annual Christmas special, there was good news for Call The Midwife fans as, after loads of speculation on when the new series might start, it was officially confirmed by a BBC announcer, that it would be kicking off on Sunday, January 1 at 8pm.

And show bosses weren't down with the announcements as, this week, it was revealed that a new nun, Sister Veronica would be making her arrival, played be Rebecca Gethings. Actress Rebecca gave a teaser of what fans of Call The Midwife can expect from her new on screen alias, telling Radio Times: "She puts her foot in it a lot and she ruffles feathers. But she always does it for good. But she's not shy and retiring.

"She doesn't wait to be invited in. She just kind of bustles in and gets going because in terms of her ministry, she’s not worth anything unless she's making a change."

A teaser for the first episode of Call The Midwife's new series reads: "A new recruit joins the team in April 1968, and while everyone is keen to make a good impression on the new arrival, she is not afraid to ruffle some feathers. Racial tensions cast a shadow over Poplar following Enoch Powell's infamous 'Rivers of Blood' speech and the effects ripple across the community."

It adds: "A terminally ill patient discharges herself from hospital and wishes to be cared for by her friend."
