Call The Midwife's Helen George delights fans with 'dream' career move as she lands iconic role

Call The Midwife actress Helen George is swapping the small screen for the big stage as she takes on one of the most famous roles in musical theatre.

Avid fans of the hit BBC drama were delighted to see popular cast member Helen return to Poplar on Christmas Day as her character Trixie made a return for the show's festive episode. And It proved to be a very memorable comeback for both Helen and Trixie as the show ended with her being proposed to.

Helen had been written out of a lot of Call The Midwife's dramatic last series due to pregnancy, with Trixie heading off to Italy to care for her sick aunt. After his first two attempts at popping the question were ruined, Matthew finally asked the big question as he he and Trixie stood in front of Chelsea Bridge, and of course, she said yes.

Just as Call The Midwife pulls in millions of viewers for its new run, Helen appeared as a guest on Wednesday's edition of The One Show, to talk about new venture - which will see her play Anna in classic musical The King and I.

As a photo of Helen in the dress appeared on screen, One Show host Alex Jones commented: "I'm jealous of the dress. It looks so fantastic; what a dream role!"

Helen replied: "I've been really lucky with it; it's such a beautiful classic musical and a role I never thought I'd have the opportunity to play. it, so yeah, it's a dream."

Opening up on the issues with the 40lbs she has to wear for the show, Helen explained: "I'm started to rehearse in the petticoat and no-one can get close to me, because it goes out so far; there's like handles in the dress to move it."
