Call for road upgrades at Dumfries and Galloway accident blackspot

A councillor is calling for action at an accident blackspot on the A75.

Pauline Drysdale wants to see improvements at the junction with the B794 to Haugh of Urr.

The plea comes after four people were taken to hospital following a collision at the junction on Friday morning.

It’s the latest in a number of accidents at the site in recent weeks, with Councillor Drysdale pushing for improvements.

The Castle Douglas and Crocketford representative said: “In recent months there have been three fairly serious accidents at the Haugh of Urr turn off and most of those involved were waiting to cross the road from the south.

“It is a particularly busy junction requiring a slip lane or, in the interim and at the very least, some warning signage as you approach the turn off.

“I have emailed Amey and been in communication with council officers who have agreed to push the Scottish Government on this as it is under their remit.

“During the winter Amey agreed to replace the damaged hi-vis bollards at the Haugh of Urr, Corsock and Clarebrand junction as there was community concern about the limited visibility at all three junctions.

“Let’s hope that they act upon the latest spate of serious accidents as all collisions involved written off vehicles and more latterly hospitalisation of a local resident.”

Friday’s accident happened just after 10.15am and involved two cars.

The road was closed until just before 2pm, with four people taken to hospital.

The need to upgrade the A75 has been identified in both the second version of the Scottish Government’s strategic transport review and the UK Government’s UK Connectivity Review.

And new research by the South West Scotland Transport Review – which is led by Stena Line, P&O Ferries and Belfast Harbour – shows nine out of 10 locals want both the A75 and A77 upgraded.

Galloway and West Dumfries MSP, Finlay Carson, said: “It is obvious that the high level of traffic on this route, including many HGVs, is a major concern for people and communities living alongside it.

“Only last Friday morning there was another worrying incident on the A75 at its junction with the B794 road. Indeed there is a history of other accidents at this particular spot.

“It is widely accepted that there needs to be a bypass around the communities of Crocketford and Springholm while there are also a number of other proposals to make travelling on the A75 safer.”

Councillor Drysdale said she had raised her concerns about the junction with the council.

A council spokesman said: “We will continue to work with Transport Scotland and the trunk road operating authority with other partners to maintain the safety of our regions’ roads.”

Amey was approached for comment.
