California woman allegedly spends months filming a family in Seattle for Chinese officials. Then FBI arrests her at LAX when they identify her target

The FBI arrested 34-year-old California realtor Wanying “Heather” Zhang at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday, October 4, as she prepared to board a flight to Shanghai. According to CNN, Zhang has been charged with acting as an unregistered agent for China. Authorities allege that she spent months conducting surveillance on the son of Taiwan’s president, Lai Ching-te, and his family while acting under the direction of Chinese officials.

This arrest highlights the ongoing tensions between the U.S. and China, particularly regarding Beijing’s interest in Taiwan. CNN noted that under the “One China” policy, the US acknowledges Beijing’s position that Taiwan is part of China. However, it does not officially recognize the Communist Party’s claim over the self-governed island.
