California sailor Kai Sato has been rescued after surviving nearly a month adrift in the Pacific Ocean when a solo voyage to Hawaii went disastrously wrong. Sato had departed California alone, hoping to complete the crossing under sail, but the journey took an unexpected turn after his boat's mast failed, leaving him unable to continue sailing toward his destination.
With the vessel drifting across the Pacific and no practical way to resume his voyage, Sato spent roughly 30 days at sea before he was located and rescued by a passing cargo ship. His survival has drawn widespread attention to both the physical and psychological challenges of enduring an extended maritime emergency alone.
