Galante described how he and his wife had little time to evacuate, with the fire spreading rapidly due to strong winds. Despite their efforts, they were only able to grab a single handbag before fleeing their home. The loss was profound, with all their belongings, including Galante's medications and his father-in-law's sculptures, consumed by the fire.
