Plastic pollution has become an increasingly complex environmental challenge, with tiny particles currently detected in water, food and the human body. California is taking another measure in its long-running response, getting ready to add microplastics to its Candidate Chemicals List on Oct. 1.
The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) finalized the rule in June, but the listing itself does not impose fresh regulatory requirements. Instead, it creates a pathway for the state to analyze products that contain or produce microplastics and [possibly pursue further regulation via a separate process.
