A California mom was accidentally shot to death by her toddler son after he reportedly got ahold of her boyfriend's unsecured gun, according to police.
Police found Jessinya Mina, 22, with a single gunshot wound to her upper body after responding to a call of a shooting victim on Friday. She was transported from an apartment to the hospital, but died of her injuries, according to the Fresno Police Department.
Detectives allege that Mina's boyfriend Andrew Sanchez, 18, left his handgun loaded in their bedroom "where children were able to access it," the department said. Mina's oldest child, a 2-year-old boy, allegedly got a hold of the gun and pulled the trigger, fatally injuring his mother.
Jessica Rodriguez, Mina's older sister, told KSEE/KGPE that Mina was in cosmetology school, and was also the mother of an eight-month-old girl.
"My niece and nephew will have to live off of memories and stories of my sister rather than her presence. We will never be able to witness my sister carry out her lifelong goals and accomplishments due to his negligence," Rodriguez told the outlet.
Rodriguez added that her sister was "loving, caring, and always gave selflessly away whenever she had the opportunity," in a statement to KFSN. "My sister didn't deserve this," she continued.
Sanchez was arrested and charged with felony child endangerment and felony criminal storage of a firearm. He was booked into Fresno County Jail but has since bailed out.
A GoFundMe has been created to help cover Mina's funeral expenses.
