A California man was arrested after being caught on surveillance footage attempting to steal cash from two ATMs using explosives. Son Nguyen, 44, of San Diego, was charged with two counts of damaging property following the incidents.
The first attempt occurred at an ATM outside California Coast Credit Union on Governor Drive in San Diego on June 8. Nguyen was seen on surveillance video using a plastic container and PVC hose to cause an explosion inside the ATM. Despite his efforts, he left empty-handed.
Authorities responded to an alarm at the credit union and discovered a makeshift explosive device connected to the ATM. A similar incident took place on June 28 at an ATM in Rancho Bernardo, where Nguyen repeated the same steps but was unsuccessful in obtaining any cash.
Investigators used surveillance footage to track Nguyen to his home, where they found a stash of explosive materials and equipment. U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that while no injuries occurred, the discovery of chemicals and equipment prevented potential future attempts.
Nguyen's actions highlight the dangers associated with ATM theft attempts and the importance of law enforcement in preventing such crimes. The swift response of authorities in apprehending Nguyen likely prevented further incidents and ensured the safety of the community.
