California Governor Gavin Newsom recently reached out to the public for input on designing a new $1 coin that celebrates innovation originating from the state. However, the responses received highlighted concerns and criticisms rather than positive achievements.
When considering innovation in California, people typically think of Silicon Valley, the tech industry, and advancements in wildlife conservation. Yet, the state has been facing challenges such as businesses relocating due to issues like crime, homelessness, and the high cost of living.
Criticism has been directed at Newsom and the state legislature for failing to address California's $73 billion budget deficit, with overspending being a major concern. Additionally, some have expressed frustration over Newsom's focus on national issues like abortion rather than tackling local problems such as insurance crises, affordability issues, rising crime rates, wildfire risks, and increasing electricity costs.
Despite these pressing issues, Newsom took to social media to solicit ideas from constituents for the design of the state's new $1 coin. Responses ranged from sarcastic to critical, with suggestions including depictions of homelessness, fires, Hollywood figures like Harvey Weinstein, and symbols representing various challenges faced by the state.
Some users suggested that a coin design contest seemed out of touch with the current state of affairs in California and recommended that Newsom seek advice from other governors, such as Florida's Ron DeSantis, known for effective governance.
While several ideas centered around highlighting California's struggles, Newsom's office did not immediately respond to requests for comments on the feedback received regarding the coin design contest.
