Aberdeen are set to close a deal for Notts County winger Cal Roberts. The 25-year-old, a standout for the Magpies last season, will undergo a medical ahead of a transfer to Pittodrie for an undisclosed fee.
Left-sided attacker Roberts had entered the final year of his deal with the National League outfit and the club have decided to cash in now over losing him for nothing in a year's time. The ex-Newcastle United youth prospect bagged himself an impressive seventeen goals for County last season and that attracted attention from Dons boss Jim Goodwin.
He said after Aberdeen's win over Raith Rovers in the Premier Sports Cup on Sunday: "We will hopefully have a bit of news on Monday on the attacking midfielder. When Connor Barron is out of the team I think we look really short in there for creativity from the midfield area.
"I would like one more attacking player, one more attacking midfield player who is comfortable on the ball. And I think we need a bit of left-back cover as well. They are the three key areas at the moment and we are working hard on them.”
Roberts came to Aberdeen’s attention while watching Jayden Richardson, who was on loan at Notts County from Nottingham Forest earlier this season. Notts signed Roberts from Blyth Spartans in 2020. He previously had a spell in Scotland on-loan at Kilmarnock from Newcastle.
