The University of California is hiring former Stanford basketball star Mark Madsen as the school’s next coach, according to a report from Matt Norlander of CBS Sports.
Madsen has spent the last four seasons coaching Utah Valley of the Western Athletic Conference, and has guided the Wolverines to a 70–51 record and two regular season conference championships.
Madsen now heads to Berkeley to lead the rival of his alma mater, Stanford. Madsen played four seasons for the Cardinal from 1996 to ’00, averaging 10.9 points and 7.9 rebounds over his 108-game college career.
Madsen takes over a Cal program that has never been in a worse spot. The Bears have won just 24 games over the last three seasons, which included a 3–29 overall record this season and a 2–18 mark in Pac-12 play.
