Caitlin Clark Makes History as Third All-Time NCAA Scorer

Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder, left, talks with guard Caitlin Clark as they walk to the bench after Caitlin Clark fell down during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game against Northwestern

Caitlin Clark of the Iowa Hawkeyes continues to make waves in NCAA women's basketball, as she climbed the scoring charts with a stellar performance against Northwestern on Wednesday night. Clark's dominant showing not only solidified her position as one of the game's brightest stars but also cemented her legacy among some of women's basketball's all-time greats.

In front of a sellout crowd at Welsh-Ryan Arena, Clark delivered a masterclass performance, tallying 35 points, 10 assists, and six rebounds. The crowd, adorned in Iowa colors and sporting Clark jerseys, fueled her exceptional play, as she showcased her scoring prowess and playmaking abilities.

With her 35-point outing, Clark surpassed two historical figures in women's basketball. First, she eclipsed Jackie Stiles' career scoring record, which landed her in third place on the NCAA women's basketball scoring list. Moments later, Clark overtook Kelsey Mitchell's scoring mark, etching her name as the all-time leading scorer in Big Ten history. Currently, Clark stands second on the list, with only Kelsey Plum's record-setting 3,527 points ahead of her.

Reflecting on her accomplishment, Clark expressed her admiration for the players she shares company with – legends such as Plum, Griner, Stiles, and Mitchell. These are players she looked up to growing up, and now she finds herself mentioned in the same breath as them.

Beyond her scoring, Clark's passing ability shone brightly in the game against Northwestern. She dished out impressive assists, setting up her teammates for easy baskets. A fast-break layup by Hannah Stuelke and a backdoor layup by Sydney Affolter were notable highlights of Clark's exceptional court vision and unselfish play.

Clark's scoring exploits, combined with her playmaking skills, propelled Iowa to a resounding 110-74 victory over Northwestern. Alongside Clark's impressive performance, Stuelke contributed 17 points and nine rebounds, while Kate Martin added 16 points and Gabbie Marshall contributed 12 on impressive shooting from beyond the arc.

The win marked Iowa's second consecutive victory, bouncing back from an overtime loss to Ohio State earlier in the season.

Meanwhile, Northwestern endured its fifth straight defeat, unable to find their rhythm against Iowa's dominating performance. Melannie Daley stood out for the Wildcats, contributing 19 points, while Hailey Weaver finished with 13. However, Northwestern struggled to find consistency throughout the entire game, leaving head coach Joe McKeown disappointed with their effort.

Looking back, Clark's impact on the court has been consistently impressive. In her collegiate career, she has only been limited to single-digit scoring once, showing her ability to consistently perform at an elite level.

The victory against Northwestern showcased the strength of the Iowa Hawkeyes, with Clark leading the charge. They showcased their superb ball movement, recording 28 assists with just five turnovers, while also dominating the boards with a 42-30 rebounding advantage.

Coach Lisa Bluder emphasized her satisfaction with the team's performance, particularly praising their ability to rebound and take care of the basketball. These aspects of their game will be critical as they face tougher challenges moving forward.

Looking ahead, Iowa will visit Maryland on Saturday night, gearing up for another intense Big Ten battle. Meanwhile, Northwestern aims to turn their fortunes around as they host Wisconsin on Sunday.

As Caitlin Clark continues her remarkable collegiate career, she adds more chapters to her legacy with each impressive performance. Her scoring achievements and playmaking abilities have firmly established her as one of the top talents in women's college basketball. With her sights set on surpassing Kelsey Plum's scoring record, the excitement surrounding Clark only continues to grow. Iowa fans, basketball enthusiasts, and casual observers alike eagerly await what the future holds for this rising star.
