Caicedo, Mudryk, Fresneda - Five Arsenal January transfers that didn't happen and why

Arsenal's January transfer window panned out differently than many could have anticipated as it included many hijacks, bids and last minute moves. The Gunners ended up securing three transfers by the end of the month, landing Leandro Trossard from Brighton, Jakub Kiwior from Spezia and Jorginho from Chelsea.

The total spend came in at roughly £53million as the side looked to strengthen the squad heading into the latter half of the season. With that now secure, a title push is on the horizon, sitting top of the Premier League and several points clear of second-place Manchester City.

However, that window could have ended very differently, with at least five transfers not going through for the Gunners by the end of proceedings. With that said, here's a look at those deals and why they didn't come to fruition.

Moises Caicedo

With hopes of bolstering the midfield, the Gunners made a late move for Brighton star Moises Caicedo, with the 21-year-old catching the eye of many top clubs. Arsenal had an opening move of £60million rebuffed by the Seagulls, who looked to stand firm, despite the Ecuador international's statement of intent to leave.

By the end of the window, Edu was unable to meet the valuation set by Brighton for the midfielder, meaning that a move was unable to go through.

Ivan Fresneda

Young Real Valladolid right-back Ivan Fresneda was the subject of interest from Arsenal as they eye some of the talents for the future. The move never quite worked for them or Borussia Dortmund in the end, with reports claiming that the Spanish side wanted an option of a loan back.

It looks as though the transfer saga is set to spill over into the summer window now, with plenty of clubs eyeing a deal.

Mykhailo Mudryk

For the past few months it seemed as though Mykhailo Mudryk was destined to be wearing the red of Arsenal come the end of the January transfer window. Multiple hints on social media and interviews only strengthened this belief amongst many, but that wasn't to be the case as one of the shocks of the window occurred.

The Gunners were unable to agree a final fee with Shakhtar Donetsk and rivals Chelsea moved quickly instead, securing a switch as the north London outfit refused to be drawn into a bidding war for the winger.

Martin Zubimendi

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi appeared as a name linked with Arsenal as a move towards adding midfield bodies became apparent. The 23-year-old opted for a stay at Sociedad for the rest of the season, despite reports that a release clause was active in his contract.

It could be yet another saga where the summer proves to be the time for moves to happen, especially with Zubimendi before the start of a new season.

Eduardo Camavinga

Another of the midfield targets, Real Madrid youngster Eduardo Camavinga was viewed as a potential loan signing for the rest of the season. However, the Frenchman stayed with Los Blancos as Carlo Ancelotti explained that he was needed for the squad for the remainder of the campaign, despite a lack of minutes so far.
