Butler, Pennsylvania Town Commissioner Edward R. Natali addressed concerns regarding the local police department's role in the recent shooting incident at a rally where former President Trump was present. Natali emphasized that the Butler Township Police Department (BTPD) did not have a security detail assigned to the event.
In a Facebook post, Natali stated that the BTPD had seven officers assigned to traffic detail and was not responsible for securing the building where the shooter positioned himself. He refuted claims that the local police were at fault and criticized reports suggesting otherwise as misinformed or misleading.
Natali expressed disappointment over an article that quoted an unnamed Secret Service agent blaming 'local police' for the incident, calling it a 'transparent deflection.' He clarified that BTPD officers responded to a report of a suspicious person and engaged with the shooter, leading to a confrontation that likely disrupted the assailant's actions.
The Commissioner highlighted the bravery of the officers involved, noting that their quick response may have prevented further harm. He condemned the focus on assigning blame instead of addressing the tragic outcome of the shooting, which resulted in multiple casualties, including one fatality.
Natali praised the dedication of the BTPD officers to their duty and community, emphasizing their commitment to public safety and service. He urged for a shift in focus towards understanding the underlying issues rather than engaging in divisive finger-pointing.
