A busy road in Salford remains closed this morning after a large soap spillage.

Fire crews were called to the A6 Broad Street near Salford Crescent Station after a truck shed its load on Monday afternoon (September 12). The road was closed to all inbound traffic to 'facilitate recovery' following the incident.

In an update this morning, local traffic pages reported that the A6 southbound onto Salford Crescent Lane is now open, but the A5063 Albion Way southbound from Broad Street to Liverpool Street is still closed.

Severe congestion has been reported in the area around Broughton Road, Cross Lane, Churchill Way, Liverpool Street, Oldfield Road, Regent Road and the M602.

Pictures from the scene on Monday showed a cordon in place around the spillage with two fire engines and police in attendance. Bus operating service Go Northwest warned of one hour long delays on surrounding routes.

Salford City Council tweeted: "Updated 5.30pm For safety reasons Albion Way junction is closed between Liverpool Street and Broad Street with a diversion in place. This is now likely to be an overnight closure."

A GMFRS spokesperson said: "At around midday today (Monday 12 th September), firefighters were called to reports of an incident on Albion Way, Salford, involving containers of soap that had fallen from a lorry onto the roadway.

"Two fire engines from Salford fire station attended the scene. Firefighters have been working closely with colleagues from Salford City Council and other agencies to carry out assessments and remove the substance from the roadway using absorbent materials.

"One fire engine remains in attendance. Broad Street and the junction at Cross Lane will be closed until this is completed."
