Busy road partially CLOSED after 'serious' crash involving car and lorry

A major Wigan road has been partially closed this afternoon after a crash between a car and a lorry.

Police have closed the A49 River Way southbound, between Central Park Way and Crompton Street, close to Wigan town centre.

Emergency services were called out to the scene at around 1.45pm today (February 18), where two people have suffered minor injuries.

Drivers are being urged to find another route if possible, with delays expected to continue this afternoon.

A spokesperson for Wigan Council said: "There are long delays on the A49 River Way, near Crompton Street junction following a serious road traffic collision.

"Emergency services are in attendance and the road has been closed southbound between Central Park Way and Crompton Street.

"It is not yet known when the road will reopen and we would advise motorists to find alternative routes where possible."

Police, firefighters and paramedics have all been in attendance, along with the highways team at Wigan Council.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At around 1.50pm today (February 18), we received reports of a road traffic collision on River Way, Wigan involving one car and a HGV.

“Two fire engines from Wigan fire station quickly attended the scene and were detained for approximately half an hour."

Traffic heading northbound on the A49 has also been reduced to one lane close to the scene.

A North West Ambulance Service spokesperson added: "We sent an ambulance but did not take anyone to hospital as both patients had minor injuries."
