Busy road forced to shut after 'large quantity' of 'cooking oil' spilt

A main Merseyside road was forced to shut due to suspected cooking oil spilt, with the road remaining shut hours later.

Millers Bridge in Bootle was forced to close after Merseyside Fire and Rescue were called to the busy road at 9.18am on Monday, June 6. Fire crews arrived shortly after 9.20am with firefighters contacting Merseyside Police to assist with traffic management.

A spokesperson for MFRS confirmed that crews close the road due to a large amount of suspected cooking oil being spilt on the busy road in South Sefton. The road was for a number of hours after emergency services attended the spillage, with MFRS handing the closure over to Sefton Council around 11am.

An MFRS spokesperson told the ECHO : "Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service was called to Millers Bridge, Bootle, on Monday 6 th June following reports of a spillage. Crews were alerted at 9.18am and on scene at 9.22am. One fire engine attended.

"On arrival crews found a large quantity of what is believed to be cooking oil spread across the roadway, along Miller Bridge from Derby Road to Oriel Road. Firefighters closed the roads and requested Merseyside Police to assist with traffic management.

"No further action was required by MFRS and fire crews left the scene at 11.14am. The incident was handed over to Sefton Council."

Sefton Council was approached for comment with the road remaining shut at the time this story is published.
