Busy Nottingham street where people haven't had a good night's sleep in years

Snaking from the back of the Asda supermarket in Hyson Green and into Forest Fields, commuters on the tram will get a sense of the busy Noel Street from afar. Tramlines run along the busy street which is densely populated with family and student houses.

Tram stops in Noel Street and in Hyson Green opened in 2004 as the first phase of the network was built between Hucknall or Phoenix Park and Station Street. Noel Street is situated off Gregory Boulevard which itself is a busy thoroughfare. And while residents in Noel Street say it doesn't take long to get used to the sound of the trams passing by, they say add in the cars into the mix at rush hour and the congestion becomes 'hectic'.

Noel Street resident Kenny Lang, a 37-year-old Amazon worker, says he struggles to get a good night's sleep a lot of the time. He described Noel Street during rush hour to a Mumbai, a city in India known for its congestion.

He said: “It’s noisy and disruptive. I haven’t had a good night's sleep in years and I have two children both under five. It’s not an ideal place to live here, it’s an ideal place for students. During rush hour and the school rush, this road gets hectic, it’s like Mumbai.”

With the annual Goose Fair making its comeback at the Forest Recreation Ground for the first time in three years, residents say the area will be disturbed even more. Full-time mum Mirita Sallas, 45, said "you appreciate the area when it’s quiet".

She said: “It’s always noisy around here. With cars, trams, people, it can sometimes be a bit of a nightmare," said the mum-of-three, who has lived in Noel Street for three years.

"Even when I look out the window, seeing a tram pass by isn’t the best view and it’s not as simple as just moving house. There’s groups of kids that hang about too which I know some people find intimidating.

"You appreciate the area when it’s quiet. With Goose Fair coming up I guess parking and noise will be ten times worse.”

Retired George Sinclair, 68, has lived in Hyson Green for 11 years. Having before resided in the nearby Forest Fields, he said: “I’ve hardly had any sleep for four years, it’s no good. The area's got worse. With the scooters and bikes riding along the pavement all the time, too.”

However, the location is also incredibly convenient. Student Anna Hall, 21, who is originally from Birmingham, has lived in Noel Street for two years. Speaking about the positives of the area, Anna said: “We’re right next to ASDA which is always handy, I go there all the time. We’re not far from The Forest or The Arboretum which is nice in the summer.”

She continued: "It’s a mix of students and families on this road. It does get noisy especially when it’s rush hour but I’ve got used to living so close to the tram tracks."
